What are they good for?
Young people use Mobile and Internet to make a change
Step out of your comfort zone and take action! Make a difference with the tools you know best! Take Internet and Mobile and change the world! Here where you live, now in your present society!
The World Summit Youth Award encourages young people under thirty years of age to show how they use their digital power to address social challenges in their communities and countries, or the world.
Internet and Mobile technology are changing the lives of people around the world. Today, the majority of the world’s population may be so called “digital natives”. They do not remember or even imagine a life without a phone, a computer or the World Wide Web. Regardless if they are from industrialized or developing countries, they appreciate the convenience of digital communication and IT, are driven by curiosity, are stunningly creative and have the innovative power to customize digital tools according to their needs and imagination.
But there is also another side to this world. The United Nations estimates that one in eight people worldwide still go hungry every day. More than 1.4 billion people live in extreme poverty. Too many women still die in childbirth and small kids are killed by malaria and other diseases, even though the means to save them exist.
More and more, people experience the impact of climate change and movements and companies continue to do too little to stabilize our environment. And although it is known that education is the key to development, millions of children from poor and rural households do not have the chance to regularly attend school and enjoy access to basic knowledge.
Each year, the WSYA selects innovative social that address the UN Millennium Development Goals which articulate the aspirations for our global community, as formulated by the UN General Assembly in the year 2000.
The MDGs inspire us to keep up the efforts and encourage young people to step forward with ambitious plans for a better future. The World Summit Youth Award is an initiative for creative young people who want to contribute in their own way towards these common goals. As digital natives, they use ICT to fight poverty, hunger, disease, gender inequality, lack of education and environmental degradation.
On this website you will find all about the most engaging and innovative projects from the last rounds of WSYA from 2005 - 2014, selected out of hundreds of submissions from over 160 UN and UNESCO member states. These projects vividly demonstrate what can be achieved when young people stand up and act together for a liveable future.
The WSYA is grateful to its partners around the world. Our global network is backbone to WSYA. Solidarity and joint action can make a real difference and is key in order to offer young people the promotion they deserve for their powerful actions using ICT.
